Clarets display pleases Coyle

Burnley manager Owen Coyle was full of praise for his players after the Clarets drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at Turf Moor.

Coyle's side came within four minutes of another fine victory on home soil, but were denied when Emile Heskey headed home for the visitors.

Afterwards, Coyle told the club's official website: "I thought we were truly outstanding in the first half. We passed and move the ball and created numerous opportunities and scored a good goal.

"I felt we were very much in control of the game, but you can feel that in a Premier League game and quickly things can change.

"We have paid the price for not clearing a corner properly and not dealing with it when it came back in.

"But I can't ask any more of my players. They have worked their socks off and, within that, shown real quality.

"Three points would have been great, but as it is we take the one and look to move on and this might turn out to be a very important point."

Burnley 1-1 Aston Villa - Match report

A late goal from substitute Emile Heskey rescued a point for Martin O'Neill's side at a wet and windy Turf Moor.

Burnley were unchanged from the side which earned their first away point of the season a fortnight ago at Eastlands, while Villa made just one change from the side that thrashed Bolton with Stiliyan Petrov replacing Nigel Reo-Coker.

Burnley went in front after Robbie Blake had been fouled by Steve Sidwell. From the resulting free-kick taken by Blake himself, the Clarets skipper beat Brad Friedel to the ball for his first Premier League goal.

Cameroon international Andre Bikey had two attempts to increase Burnley's lead, firstly shooting over from the edge of the penalty area and then heading a Blake corner wide of the target.

Villa's best chance in the opening half came after hesitation from Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen which was seized upon by Gabriel Agbonlahor who found Ashley Young who was unfortunate to see his attempt drop the wrong side of the crossbar.

With the elements in their favour in the second half Villa enjoyed plenty of possession and Agbonlahor was denied by Jensen at the expense of a corner when clean through.

The home team had to rely on the counter-attack with striker Steven Fletcher producing a fine left-foot shot which Friedel did well to turn over the crossbar.

Both managers rang the changes with Villa introducing Stewart Downing after the wide-man's recovery from a long-term injury following his transfer from Middlesbrough.

But it was another substitute, Heskey, who ensured that Martin O'Neill's side left Turf Moor with a point when the substitute headed home from close range following a cross by James Milner.

While the result will no doubt disappoint Burnley manager Owen Coyle after his side were in front for most of the game, his team nevertheless demonstrated once again that this corner of East Lancashire will be a difficult place for opponents to come and collect points.

The result also ensures that while these two sides may not have met for many years, Burnley had not lost against Villa in 23 games.

After scoring so close to the end of the game Villa will no doubt be happy enough with the point but their away form remains a matter of concern when compared to the fine performances on the road which Villa turned in last season.

Coyle dismisses Scotland talk

Burnley boss Owen Coyle has no intention of leaving Turf Moor to become Scotland's new manager.

Speculation had linked the 43-year-old former St Johnstone boss with the vacant job as Scotland's national coach following George Burley's departure on Monday evening.

But Coyle moved quickly to dampen the speculation, saying: "I love it at Burnley. My job is here and that's what I'll look to continue to do.

"I've got a job here to do what we're doing in the Premier League and I don't want any distraction ahead of the game against Aston Villa on Saturday.

"I'm the Burnley manager. I've been in the position before when there's been advances from other clubs.

"I've always said I'm loving everything I'm doing at the football club and that remains the case, so I think that would tell everybody my feelings."

Craig Levein, Walter Smith, Gary McAllister, Jim Jefferies and Darren Ferguson are all being linked with the post.

Fletcher enjoying Clarets life

Burnley striker Steven Fletcher is delighted with the way his career in England has started, following his summer move south from Hibernian.

The 22-year-old Scotland international has scored six times in 14 appearances for the Clarets, as Burnley have made a fine start to life back in the top flight of English football.

Fletcher told the Glasgow Herald: "It is amazing down here, even better than I imagined.

"With Hibs you went to the same places again and again. Suddenly, I'm playing massive games in massive venues every week.

"I have to admit that when I arrived down here and we made a really slow start in pre-season, I wondered what I'd let myself in for.

"Then we lost our first league game at Stoke, but the first home game changed everything. If we'd lost to Manchester United, we might have ended up a bit despondent.

"But it was a midweek night, the atmosphere was incredible and as everyone knows, we beat them.

"For a club which has just been promoted from the Championship it's a huge challenge, but we're doing okay so far. We're making progress bit by bit.

"People were putting pressure on us about our away record, for now we've gone to a big club like Manchester City, drawn 3-3 and probably should have won."

McDonald more confident than ever

The midfielder has been hampered by injuries since moving to Lancashire from Dundee in the summer of 2008.
He has had limited opportunities to impress in the Premier League this season but is gradually becoming a more prominent figure.
Having scored a late equaliser in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City at the weekend, the 21-year-old is full of confidence ahead of future challenges.
"I've been coming on in the last few Premier League games and I feel at home now in that kind of company, among the best players around," he said.
"A few years ago I'd have gone on to the pitch with all Man City's stars and been fazed by it but you've got to handle the pressure - you can't be affected by it every time you touch the ball.
"I'm more of a confident player now - that's something that has come since moving down to Burnley - and coming on and scoring in games like last Saturday obviously helps.
"It's been the right move for me. For my age, I'm where I wanted to be at this stage of my career."

McDonald keen to step up

Burnley midfielder Kevin McDonald hopes his display at the weekend, when he came off the substitute's bench to score the Clarets' third goal in the 3-3 draw at Manchester City, will be enough to earn a regular place in Owen Coyle's starting line-up.

The 21-year-old former Dundee player has not started a league game since the 1-0 Championship victory at Blackpool in March but understands Coyle's dilemma.

He said: "I've not started this season yet, but I can't complain, the team's been doing well as have everyone in their positions.

"All I can do is come on and try my best, give what I can give and, if I get a goal at the end of it, then obviously that's an added bonus.

"Last year in the Championship I came here to get a few games. I never got as much as I'd like, but that's football.

"You've just to take your chance when it comes, that's what it's all about."

Draw leaves Coyle ecstatic

Burnley manager Owen Coyle was a happy man after seeing his side earn their first away point of the season from a thrilling 3-3 draw at Manchester City.

The Clarets led 2-0 at Eastlands before the home side roared backed to take the lead, only for Kevin McDonald to pop up three minutes from time to send the travelling fans wild.

Coyle admitted afterwards: "It is a monkey off our backs.

"Funnily enough, I felt very comfortable at 2-0. I would have loved to get to half-time in that position.

"We are on a learning curve and if we had been an experienced Premier League team we would have seen it off.

"I was prepared to lose 4-2 if it gave us a chance of drawing.

"There is an unbelievable spirit in our dressing room. We are the smallest town to be in the Premier League, but we are determined to give this a real fight.

"Getting into the Premier League was an unbelievable achievement. Staying in it would exceed that by some distance."

Burnley Vs Manchester City Results

Burnley secured their first away point in the Premier League this season, while Manchester City's run of draws was extended to five following a thrilling contest at Eastlands..

The visitors were fulling deserving of their second goal, however, and Steven Fletcher was given the easiest of tap-ins after Chris Eagles capitalised on an incisive Burnley counter-attack on 32 minutes to leave Lescott in his wake and deliver a cross between the luckless defender and Given.

Shaun Wright-Phillips delivered a spark of hope at half-time when he bamboozled Robbie Blake and hacked a hopeful shot towards Brian Jensen, but his effort deflected off Stephen Jordan's outstretched back leg and wrong-footed the Burnley keeper before creeping in at the back post.

The City goal was the least they deserved for all their hard work but two quick second-half goals gave City an unexpected lead.

Toure came up for a 55th minute free-kick taken by Gareth Barry and found himself scoring the equaliser after Lescott arrived with a cross from the far post.

Before the home crowd had fully digested that goal, City found themselves in front after Wright-Phillips' right-wing cross was converted on the half-volley by Craig Bellamy two minutes later.

With their visitors reeling, City had over half an hour to make sure of a win but Adebayor and Carlos Tevez spurned a succession of chances to put the game beyond the visitors including a wild pointblank lash from Tevez just before he was substituted.

Substitute Kevin McDonald finally made City pay for their profligacy with three minutes to go when he latched onto Fletcher's headed knockdown and scored a memorable - and probably deserved - equaliser for Burnley in front of his own fans.

Penny relishes Clarets chance

Back-up goalkeeper Diego Penny is relishing the chance to feature for Burnley in the absence of the injured Brian Jensen.

The 25-year-old Peru international came on as a substitute in the 3-1 defeat by Wigan Athletic last weekend, after Jensen had suffered ankle ligament damage.

Penny told the club's official website: "I always want to see my team-mates fit to play, including Brian, but in this situation I had to replace him and I did my best.

"All of my team-mates showed me their support and for me that moment was very important. I was very excited about it. It's hard to come on, but I tried to do my best.

"When I came over everyone knows I started to play, but then things changed and after that we got promoted, so I have had to be patient and keep working hard all time, the same as Brian.

"I am waiting for my chance and if I have to play against Hull City I will do my best and hopefully we will get the three points."

Results... Burnley Vs Hull City Oct 31

Burnley entertain Premier League strugglers Hull City at Turf Moor on Saturday as they look to get back to winning ways on home soil.

Following their 3-1 reversal against Wigan Athletic last week, the Clarets' perfect start to their home campaign came to a crashing end.

They had already put Manchester United, Everton, Sunderland and Birmingham City to the sword but their dismal away form, five defeats from five, continues to haunt them.

However, Owen Coyle's men will be confident of downing a Hull City side that currently sit in the relegation zone.

Burnley will look to the evergreen Robbie Blake for their attacking inspiration alongside Steven Fletcher, a club record £3million summer signing from Hibernian, who is leading the goal charts at the club.

Injury problems are starting to mount and after goalkeeper Brian Jensen limped off with an ankle injury in the defeat to Wigan, he could miss out.

Chris McCann (knee), Martin Paterson (knee cartilage), Jay Rodriguez (ankle) and Kevin McDonald (knee ligament) all remain long-term absentees.

Phil Brown will take his Tigers outfit across the Pennines as they look to pick up their first away win of the season.

They have picked up just one point on their travels to date - this coming in a 1-1 draw at newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers back in August.

Heavy defeats against Sunderland (4-1) and Liverpool (6-1) will be on their mind and they will be striving to pick up at least a point this weekend.

Hull City have just one injury doubt ahead of the game with Jimmy Bullard struggling to overcome a knee complaint although Ian Ashbee is definitely out with a long-term knee injury.

The last time the club's last met in a league fixture was when they were both fighting it out in the Championship during the 2007/08 season.

A goal in stoppage time from now Sunderland man Michael Turner delivered all three points to the Humberside-based club.

3-0
